COMPLIANCE OVERVIEW

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 established the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) whose charge was, and still is, to enforce protective workplace safety and health standards for the U.S. work force. Healthcare workers should be just as knowledgeable in OSHA standards as their employer to protect themselves while working in a high-risk field. Dental health care personnel (DHCP) work in a unique and hazardous environment that differs from other healthcare professions. Dental workers face many serious safety and health hazards such as bloodborne and communicable disease pathogens, biological, respiratory, and ergonomic hazards, as well as chemical, drug, and radiological exposures.

A comprehensive working knowledge of infection prevention best practices is an essential function for all healthcare professionals. When strong workplace controls such as ongoing training with written and reviewed policies and procedures are not established, the patient and provider have an increased risk for an adverse health event. This course will present OSHA standards that are compliant with the New York continuing education requirements using evidence-based science.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course, the oral health care provider will be able to:

  • Define standard precautions and identify barriers and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) that is needed to decrease the risk for an adverse health event from the transmission of pathogenic organisms in the healthcare setting.
  • Identify workplace safety controls such as engineering controls and understand their role in mitigating health hazard risks from bloodborne pathogens.
  • Follow OSHA requirements for proper reprocessing of reusable devices, surface disinfection and barrier protection, waste disposal, sharps handling and protection, laboratory, air, and radiation safety.
  • Practice water line and vacuum maintenance that ensures patient safety and prolongs the life of equipment.
  • Recognize the importance of OSHA compliance training and knowledge to protect oneself from hazards and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Incorporate a contemporary office plan of protection using current evidence-based science.
