It includes guidelines on recognizing physical and emotional indicators of abuse, forensic evidence collection, and the influence of implicit bias on reporting. The reporting process in New York State is outlined, emphasizing legal protections for mandated reporters and the consequences of failing to report. Preventive strategies are discussed, focusing on coordinated efforts at individual, community, and societal levels. The course also covers the Abandoned Infant Protection Act and the INSPIRE model for ending violence against children. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to define relevant terms, discuss the prevalence of child abuse, identify risk factors and indicators, understand legal reporting processes, and implement strategies to prevent abuse and support victims.

  • Define terms relevant to child abuse and maltreatment according to international, federal, and New York State definitions.
  • Discuss the incidence and prevalence of child abuse and maltreatment internationally, federally, and in New York State.
  • Categorize risk factors for child abuse and maltreatment.
    Distinguish among the physical and emotional indicators of child abuse and maltreatment and their impact on health and well-being.
  • Describe the child abuse and maltreatment reporting process including placing a child in protective custody, legal protections for mandated reporters, and consequences for failing to report.
  • Explain strategies to prevent child abuse and maltreatment.
